Despite their advantages, many promising biopesticides
that are both efficacious and safe never progress beyond the research
stage to become practical tools for farmers. This is because the
biopesticide development process, as outlined in the adjacent flow chart, is a
complex one that requires a broad array of resources -- in the form of
experience, information, and financial support – that are not always
available in developing countries. And each missing resource creates a
barrier that can ultimately prevent a valuable biopesticide from being
developed.
One of the roles of the Microbial Division is to
facilitate the process of bringing these resources together – the
right people, skills, equipment, investors, information and organisations
– and in so doing, overcome the barriers to the utilisation of biopesticides.
